It was the late 80s, and young Martin Pistorius, growing up in South Africa, was mostly thinking about electronic information industry. But at the age of 12, his life took an unexpected turn. He came down with a strange illness. The doctors weren’t sure what it was. He got worse. Finally he lost his ability to move by himself, his ability to make eye contact, and then his ability to speak. The hospital told his parents, Rodney and Joan Pistorius, to take him home and keep him comfortable until he died.
But he didn’t die. “Martin just kept going,” his mother says. His father would get up at 5 o’clock in the morning, get him dressed, and take him to the special care center where he’d leave him.
Joan clearly remembers looking at Martin one day and saying: “I hope you die.” “I know that’s a terrible thing to say. I just wanted some sort of relief.” she says now. And she didn’t think her son was there to hear it. But he was.
Then one day, he decided he’d had enough. He wanted to gain some small measure of control over his day. So he figured out how to tell time by how the sun moved across a room. That was the start. Finally Martin found a way to reorganize even the ugliest thoughts around him like when his mother said, “I hope you die.”
Overtime, Martin began reorganizing his thoughts. And slowly, as his mind felt better, something else happened—his body began to get better, too. It involved unknown mind developments and a hard battle to prove that he existed.

London has topped a list of the most popular global city destinations: The Global Destinations Cities Index (指數) showed the city is expected to receive 18.7 million visitors at the end of this year.
Bangkok was the second most popular city with 16.4 million visitors predicted for this year.
Using information on the total number of international arrivals and spending from overnight visitors，MasterCard found that 67% of London’s international visitors come from other European cities, although the city’s top “feeder” was New York. Paris, which was the third most popular city destination, also had New York as its biggest feeder city. The majority of its visitors, 53%, were from outside of Europe.
Marion King, President at MasterCard UK, said, “As London keeps its top spot for both visitor spending and international visitors, there is a huge chance for businessmen.” Mayor of London Boris Johnson said, “With nearly nineteen million visitors this year London is the world’s favourite place to visit.”
It is the third time in four years that London has topped the list, missing out to Bangkok last year. However, this year London saw an 8% growth in visitors, while Bangkok saw an 11% decline, dropping from 18.5 million visitors to a predicted 16.4 million.
Earlier this year ONS showed that London had 16.8 million visitors last year which was the highest recorded number of overseas visitors since records began in 1961. At the time, Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, said the capital’s “wonderful mix of history, culture, art, music and sport” was key to its success.

Over the centuries, through genetic and cultural adaptation, humans and a wild bird species have learned to work together. When human honey-hunters make a certain noise, a bird called the honeyguide does its job with unbelievable accuracy, leading people to hidden bees’ nests.
Scientists put this ancient practice to the test. When biologists compared the honeyguide call to other sounds，the traditional sound sent the honeyguides to hidden bees’ nest three times more often than other sounds, according to a study in the journal Science. When you make the right noise, you end up with more honey, compared to the wrong noise.
“It’s an exchange of information for skills,” said study lead author Spottiswoode, an evolutionary biologist at the University of Cambridge. She failed to find bees’ nests until her friends made the right noise, and then was rewarded with honey that’s very rich and delicious.
The honeyguide has a special ability to find bees’ nests. “Scientists aren’t quite sure how it works, but it likely has to do with an advanced sense of smell,” Spottiswoode said. Still, there’s a problem: These nests are stuck in trees that are difficult for the birds to reach. Even worse, the bees sting the birds, sometimes to death. The people of the region, who make a living on the honey, have tools that can get at those nests and they use smoke to drive the bees away, reducing the stinging problem.
It’s clear that the birds have adapted in an evolutionary way through natural selection, but for people the arrangement is probably more cultural.
